To ensure a smooth and organised start, designated start zones will be in place at the starting line of each race.
7Cairns Marathon Festival is implementing corral design changes to ensure you have the best possible experience on race day. Using guidance from Australian Athletics, current research and crowd safety experts we are modifying the design of the race start so you can run faster and experience less congestion.
As you commence your race there will be corral design changes that will create a temporary pinch point 25-30 meters from the start line. Once you pass through that space you will be able to run freely up to the start line and commence your race. This design change has been utilsed at several other races and results in significantly less congestion and a more satisfying experience for athletes.
FAQ’s
Will my race time be impacted by this change?
No, your official net time commences as you cross the start line of the race. This corral change will ensure you are running as you cross the line. You will be able to run at goal race pace as you commence the event. Remember to press “start” on your watch as you cross the start line, not when the starter gun goes off.
Will I be in the race corral longer?
It will take an extra few minutes longer to pass through the pinch point however this is prior to the race start line, so your official net time won’t be impacted.
Why are we implementing this change?
Research has shown that congestion within running events results in a less satisfying experience for runners, generally from not being able to run at goal pace. Where events are very congested runners can also experience tripping and falling. We are implementing changes to ensure the best possible race experience for runners.
Will other runners still slow me down?
Utilising this corral design change it has been proven to give runners more space to safely pass and run at their goal pace. All runners should seed themselves in the correct start zones, so you are running with other runners who are aiming to run at your goal pace.
Can I give feedback after the event?
Yes. After the event we will conduct a survey seeking feedback on your race experience. We are committed to improving our race experience so you can safely run your fastest times possible.
